If you’re mulling over the idea of buying a Kindle this Christmas, either for yourself or your loved ones, you might be interested to know that there’s a workaround that enables you to shop the US Kindle Store even without an American billing address or credit card. The US storefront offers not just generally lower prices but also hundreds of thousands of additional books to choose from that, due to publishing restrictions, may just not be available outside of America.
The process is simple, assuming you already have an Amazon account linked to a Philippine credit card.
- Create another Amazon account. Do not use the same email address you are using for your Philippine account.
- For the new account, enter any valid US address. A relative, a friend, a Starbucks. As long as it’s real and it exists, or at least the zip code exists.
- On your original Amazon account, purchase an Amazon gift card (the electronic version, not the paper card) Try a small amount first, like $10, and email yourself the code. Doesn’t matter what address you send it to as long as you receive it.
- Once you’ve received the code, log on to your new Amazon account and redeem the code. You now have a current balance of $10!
- On your Kindle device (or Kindle app for iPhone/iPad/BlackBerry/Android/whatever), be sure you log on with the same email address that you used for your new Amazon account.
- Go shopping and enjoy!
Be aware though that supplying them with your login info means that they can also make purchases using your GC balance. You trust them, right? But at any rate, since you did not link directly to a credit card, you’ll only be at risk for however much is loaded into your account. Then again, perhaps they’ll return the favor!
